How to Write a Creative Brief for Your Book Cover Designer

Last updated: October 18, 2026

A book cover design brief template gives your designer everything they need in one place: your genre and readers, a short story summary and mood, key imagery, reference covers, technical specifications and how you will give feedback. A clear brief saves rounds of revisions and leads to a cover that fits your book. References in a brief show direction. They are not a request to copy another cover.

Key takeaways

  • Lead with genre, subgenre and target readers. That decides most design choices.
  • Share the mood and a few key images, not the whole plot.
  • Include three to five recent reference covers, and explain what you like about each.
  • Give technical details early: formats, trim size, estimated page count.
  • Collect feedback into one clear response per round.

What story details should you share?

Your designer does not need every subplot. They need what shapes the cover:

  • A one- or two-sentence summary.
  • Genre and subgenre, as specifically as possible.
  • Target readers: who will love this book?
  • Mood and tone: cozy, dark, funny, epic, tense, sensual.
  • Setting: time period and place.
  • Main characters, if they might appear, with key physical details.
  • Important symbols or objects.
  • Comparable titles: two or three recent books readers of yours also enjoy.

Which references are useful?

The most useful references are recent covers in your exact subgenre. For each one, say what you like: "I like the color palette," "I like how the title is integrated into the illustration," "I like the minimal layout." Also include a cover or two you dislike, and why. That helps just as much.

Avoid sending only one reference or asking for a near copy. A good designer creates something original that fits the same market. See how to choose a book cover for your genre.

What technical details matter?

  • Formats: ebook only, or also paperback and hardcover.
  • Trim size for print, such as 5.5 by 8.5 inches or 6 by 9 inches.
  • Estimated page count, which affects spine width.
  • Paper type: white or cream, which also affects spine width. On KDP, white paper adds 0.002252 inch per page and cream adds 0.0025 inch per page (Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, n.d.).
  • Platform: KDP, IngramSpark or both, since templates differ.
  • Exact title, subtitle, author name and series name, spelled as they should appear.
  • Back cover copy, if print, plus any quotes or logos.
  • Deadline, including any cover reveal date.

How should you give feedback?

  • Look at thumbnail size first, then full size.
  • Describe the problem, not the fix. "The title feels hard to read" is more useful than "make it red."
  • Collect all feedback into one message per round, including from anyone else you consult.
  • Prioritize. Separate must-changes from nice-to-haves.
  • Stay close to the brief. If you change direction, say so clearly.
  • Get input from genre readers, not just friends and family.

What happens after the brief?

Your designer reviews the brief, may ask questions, then develops concepts. See the book cover design process for what comes next.
