From Final Draft to Finished Book: What Happens During Book Production?
Share
Last updated: October 18, 2026
The book production process turns a final, edited manuscript into finished files ready to publish: cover design, interior typesetting, ebook formatting, proofreading of the laid-out pages, proof copies and final file delivery. Print and ebook follow slightly different paths, and the order matters. Fixing text after layout is slower and more expensive than fixing it before.
Key takeaways
- Production starts after editing is finished. Changing text during layout causes problems.
- Cover design can begin early, but the print cover cannot be finalized until the page count is known.
- Proofreading happens on the formatted pages, not the Word file.
- Always order and check a printed proof before release.
What does the process look like?
Here is a typical production workflow:
- Final manuscript: fully edited, copyedited and approved.
- Cover concept: the front cover is designed, often in parallel with editing.
- Interior design: trim size, fonts, margins, chapter openings and scene breaks are set.
- Typesetting: the text is laid out on the page.
- Proofreading: the formatted pages are checked for errors.
- Corrections: fixes are made to the layout.
- Print cover finalized: spine width is calculated from the final page count.
- Ebook formatted: the text is converted to a reflowable file.
- Proof copy: a printed copy is ordered and checked.
- Final files delivered and uploaded.
How do print and ebook workflows differ?
| Step | Ebook | |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | Fixed pages at a chosen trim size | Reflowable text that adapts to screens |
| Cover | Full wrap: front, spine and back, with bleed | Front cover only |
| Key specs | Margins, bleed, spine width, paper type | File format, image size, table of contents |
| Proof | Printed proof copy | Preview on several devices |
| ISBN | Needed for most distribution | Not required on KDP |
When does cover design happen?
The front cover can be designed early, even during editing, because it depends mainly on genre, title and mood. Having it early also helps with marketing and preorders. The full print cover has to wait for the final page count, because the spine width depends on it. For KDP paperbacks, spine width is calculated from page count and paper type, and the cover needs 0.125 inch of bleed on all sides (Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, n.d.-a). For the ebook cover, KDP recommends 2,560 by 1,600 pixels (Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, n.d.-b). See the book cover design process.
What is typesetting?
Typesetting is laying out the text on the page: choosing fonts, setting line spacing and margins, styling chapter openings, handling scene breaks and making sure pages look balanced. Good typesetting is almost invisible. Poor typesetting makes a book feel amateur. Read about book typesetting services.
What is a proof copy?
A proof copy is a printed copy of your book ordered before publication so you can check it physically. Screen previews can miss problems like colors that print darker, text too close to the spine, or a spine title that is off-center. Check your proof for cover alignment and color, margins and gutters, page numbers, headers, chapter openings, typos missed earlier and blank or missing pages.
What is checked before release?
- Front matter: title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents.
- Back matter: acknowledgments, author bio, other books, links.
- Metadata: title, author name, description and categories match across platforms.
- ISBNs: the right one is used for each format.
- Ebook: links work, the table of contents is functional and images display correctly.
What files are delivered?
- Print interior PDF.
- Print cover PDF (full wrap).
- Ebook file, usually EPUB.
- Ebook cover image.
- Marketing images, if included.
